Enterprise architecture tools compared

A feature-by-feature comparison of four enterprise architecture platforms, followed by our read on each one — including the concerns worth raising before you sign anything.

Below is a feature comparison of the major enterprise architecture platforms, followed by our commentary on each vendor — and the questions we would want a straight answer to before committing.

One note on how the grid is built. We left out the rows where every platform behaves the same: they all model applications, capabilities and technology, they all do single sign-on and an API, and five ticks in a row helps nobody choose. What remains is the ground where the products genuinely differ.

Commentary

Our read on each vendor

The questions we would want answered before signing anything.

SAP LeanIX

SAP — acquired September 2023

Concerns: among the most expensive options here, and the acquisition changed more than the logo. Pricing now sits inside SAP’s standard list-price framework, LeanIX is routinely bundled into RISE with SAP proposals, and delivery follows SAP’s partner-led model — so expect an implementation partner in the room and a services line running alongside the licence, not instead of it. Ask what renewal costs as a standalone item if you never adopt the rest of the SAP estate, and how much of the roadmap is now decided SAP-side.

Bizzdesign — Horizzon, HOPEX and Alfabet

Bizzdesign, MEGA International and Alfabet — consolidated 2025–2026

Concerns: a lot of product — three overlapping platforms under one brand — all priced at the enterprise end and none of it published. Historically this is the heaviest end of the market for implementation services: products this deep and this configurable assume a configuration programme before anyone sees value, and that bill recurs every time the model changes. Consolidations also tend to resolve towards fewer products rather than more. Ask which platform your requirements land on, what its committed investment horizon is, and what the services cost across year one.

Ardoq

Ardoq AS — Norway

Concerns: packages are described publicly but prices are not, so the budget only becomes clear once you are inside a sales cycle. Scenario modelling and advanced integrations are priced as add-ons rather than included, which means the entry number is rarely the number you end up paying, and onboarding is guided rather than self-serve. Ask what year three costs fully loaded, with every add-on you actually need switched on.

Avolution ABACUS

Avolution — Australia

Concerns: plan tiers are published but prices are not, and specific cloud regions are not documented publicly — a real problem if data residency is a procurement gate rather than a preference. The on-premise option pushes infrastructure, upgrades and availability back onto your own team, which is a cost that never appears on a licence quote. Ask for the region list, the AI processing location and the upgrade cadence in writing before you shortlist.

Why we win

Why teams move to EA Composer

Switching

What a move actually costs

What happens to the data in our current tool?

An EA repository is components and the relationships between them, and every platform above can export that. EA Composer imports from Excel, so the usual path is export, shape the spreadsheet, import. The REST API reads and writes directly if you would rather script it, or run both systems in parallel through a transition.

How long before it is actually useful?

Access is immediate and there is no implementation project, so the constraint is your data rather than our provisioning. Teams arriving with a reasonable application inventory are generally working in the repository the same week. Visio files and draw.io diagrams carry over directly.

We are mid-contract. Is it worth looking now?

Usually yes, and earlier than feels natural. Renewal conversations go differently when you already know what the alternative costs and have used it, and enterprise agreements often require notice months before the end date. A parallel trial takes the time pressure out of the decision.

Every competitor claim on this page was taken from the vendor’s own public material or from published reporting as at that date. Enterprise architecture products change quickly — regions, AI capability, packaging and ownership all move — so please verify current details directly with each vendor before making a decision. A dash in the grid means we could not confirm something publicly, not that the capability is absent. If you believe anything here is inaccurate or out of date, including if you work for one of the vendors listed, tell us and we will correct it.
